While some people have found careers they love, many are still looking for their dream job. If you really dislike your current employer and are still looking for your dream job, it can be difficult to stay motivated at your current place of employment.
Well, don’t fear! You are not alone and there are indeed some things that you can do to increase your motivation and find ways to love the job you’re in now. Here is the five-step process I share with my clients who choose to make lemonade out of lemons:
1) Name your dream job and the things that you love about it. There is no better way to create the future than by imagining it! What do you want to do? This simple question is often the most difficult for people to answer. Believe it or not, some people are so used to complaining, that they don’t take the time to actually realize what would make them truly happy. HINT: It’s often NOT money.
2) List all of the aspects of your current job that are similar to your dream job. After listing your dream job and the things that you would love to do, see where there are similarities in your current job. Now before you start to boo-hoo it, try it; you’d be surprised at how many things are similar between your dream job and your current one. For example, do you like to work with people? Do you enjoy working on teams? Do you have the opportunity to get be creative?
3) Identify ways that you can do more of what you like at your current job. Although you won’t get to do everything you enjoy all of the time, you can definitely find ways to do it more. And, when you are able to do the things you really enjoy, do it the way you would at your dream job – with joy, enthusiasm, and professionalism.
4) Treat your current job as if it were your dream job. When you wake up say to yourself, “I look forward to going to work and (fill in what you most look forward to doing at your dream job).” You can also adapt this to say something like, “I am so lucky to go to work today and help people figure out how to make life easier for our customers.” This may sound cheesy, but I promise you–it works. Your attitude truly determines your latitude.
5) Track your motivation. Keep track of your attitude toward your work, colleagues, and clients/customers. Make note of what you notice about yourself and how others respond to you. Keep a log every day for at least two weeks and then go to twice a week for one month and then once a week for three months. When you start to see progress, staying positive will be easy to do. And, when you’re positive, great things begin to happen!
When you are positive, things begin to change for you because you attract what you put out. So, if you’re still looking for that dream job, you’ll start to notice how jobs fitting the description you outlined begin to present themselves. You’ll then begin to get called for different types of interviews, and so on.
To be clear, just changing the way you feel won’t get you the dream job you want; you will still have to do the work and put yourself out there. But … staying positive is the first step to creating the future you want for yourself.
Try the process and let me know how it works for you!
As always, with love and light, I wish you pleasant journeys!
